The “Conquer The Challenge” 2-Day Portfolio Challenge is specifically designed to provide graduating seniors from the Communication Design area with an opportunity to shape and work on their portfolios. The 2-Day Challenge is also intended to jump-start the annual SAGA Portfolio Review, the longest continuously running student portfolio review in the world. We have invited industry professionals, many of which are alumni and faculty, to provide students with critical feedback on portfolio improvement. Graduating seniors are encouraged to sign up for both days. Here is a detailed description of the 2-Day Challenge.

Students are required to have a minimum of 4 to 6 pieces of work in their portfolio, along with personal brand touchpoints such as, but not limited to, business card, resume, digital portfolio, LinkedIn profile, website, cover letter, etc. These items are crucial as you, other students, and the industry professional audit and review your work together.

Saturday, November 21 (9:30am to 4:00pm)

All times are Pacific Standard Time (PST).

We’ll kick off the event at 9:30am with short welcome remarks, followed by introducing the team. In addition, shortly after check-in, we will kick off the event with a guest speaker to motivate all of us, followed by a typography workshop conducted by Vesna Petrovic. We will take a virtual lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30. Around 1:30 students will be paired with industry professionals to have their portfolios reviewed for a diagnosis and audit. Students will be given the completed checklist by the industry professional with notes or suggestions and a written plan for how to improve the portfolio. This is not an interview; it is simply a chance to receive specific feedback on how to improve your portfolio. Students and industry professionals will be notified about the Zoom room link and names of paired students/professionals prior to the event.

Please refer to the agenda for more detailed information. The day will end at around 4:00pm. This is also an opportunity for students to network with other students, faculty, and industry professionals. The number of pieces does not matter, but we encourage students to bring as much work as possible for review. A resume is also a must, as well as a website.

Sunday, November 22 (9:30am to 2:00pm)

All times are Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The day will start with a short introduction. Industry professionals and faculty will meet with specific students based on prior appointments. Just like Saturday, 2 to 3 students will be assigned to a professional to meet, discuss, audit, and review students portfolios. Sunday is meant for you to receive additional feedback and information about your portfolio, receive tips for finding jobs, and learn more about the interview process. The day will end at around 2:00 pm with a wrap-up of events beginning at 1:00 pm. This general session is open to both students and professionals to comment and reflect on the two-day event. This is also time for students to share their work with all of us.
